Women of color have been and will continue to be the glue and stabilizing force of culture, society and community. However, while the beauty and strength of their character can garner them lauded attention, they are often marginalized, undervalued and viewed with contempt even within their own cultures. Their attractive allure and nurturing nature often times is manipulated and used as fulcrum for subjugation. Time and time again their value is minimized to sexual objects and diminished as tools for labor.

A definite example of this complex dichotomic situation is highly evident in Caribbean landscape. The islands are celebrated for their welcoming culture, tasty food and lavished pageantry but the painful history of slavery, abuse and conditioning at the hands of European colonizers are often ignored and omitted. As enslaved people of African Ancestry in the Caribbean, sexual assault, exploited labor and dehumanizing servitude were part of the experience. However, so was rebellion. Countless tales of uprisings against their enslavers throughout the many islands included women fighting alongside men for their freedom.

Those conditions and circumstances have directly influenced the continuing mindset, attitude and behavior of women.
